Choosing an interior designer for your home can be an exciting and important decision to make. You hope to put your trust in someone that will take your interior taste seriously, while still incorporating their professional experience to make everything look as you envisioned. Here are some consultation questions that you should always ask before hiring an interior designer. These questions will help you learn more about their style and if they are the right fit for you.
How would you describe your signature design style?
& What kind of clients do you typically work with?
At the very least, these two questions should always be asked. It’s like a basic get to know you, except with a designer. Don’t hesitate to ask these questions and learn more about who you could potentially be working with, we are used to it!
What services do you offer?
Some interior designers offer more or less services than what you would expect. Always ask this question so you know how much you are able to get done with one person’s expertise. This will also allow you to plan in case you do need to hire someone else to complete the project, or if your designer has got it all covered for you.
Do you have any examples of your past work?
This is super important. Getting an inside look at their past work can tell you more about a designer's experience and what kind of styles they have completed in the past.
How much involvement will you allow me to have in the project?
If you love being involved, this is definitely a question to ask. Some designers like to work solo and show off the grand result at the very end, while other designers appreciate the input that their clients have and want to make sure there is approval for all of the big steps along the way. There is nothing wrong with either style, but if you don’t like surprises or if you don’t want to be included in the process at all then ask your designer if they are willing to accommodate how you want the process to go.
