Seemingly trivial design decisions can turn into expensive issues fast. With a little bit of planning, prep, and research, you can avoid some of these rookie mistakes.
Forgetting to test paint colors in different lighting
From sunlight streaming through the windows to the color of your light bulbs, lighting can alter the color of your paint. To avoid this mistake, test the paint on all of the walls. Look at the swatches at different times of the day to see how sun and artificial lighting impacts the shade.
Not measuring furniture before buying it
Before you fall in love with a piece of furniture, make sure it will fit! Map out the exact measurements of your desired purchase to help you visualize how it will work in your space. Informed decisions save money!
Cheap window treatments
Each window can have different dimensions, therefore you can't buy one size to fit all your windows. Investing your money in custom window treatments ensures you will get the perfect look so you won't have to replace them later.
Ignoring your room’s scale
Proportion matters! Make sure the scale of a piece of furniture is proportionate to the size of the room. If you have a huge sectional in a small room, it will feel cramped. But, if you have a spacious room and a small sofa, it will feel as if it's floating in a sea of emptiness.
Filling up a space quickly just to “finish” it
No matter how enticing the price tag on an inexpensive piece of furniture may be, buying poorly made furnishings, or too many pieces at once just to complete your room, almost always ends in regret. Waiting to save up for the dream pieces will save you money in the long run.
